Rough and Tough Battle today!!!

It was another excellent effort by the Peninsula Co-op reserve team today against the Vancouver Whitecap FC.  It was a very strong defensive effort vs. a team with a few U17 National team players and a U20 New Zealand National player (Victoria product Emma Fletcher).   In addition to Emma’s fast footwork, another Island player Elise Wyatt showed some great flashes of speed and skill in the game. Throughout the game the Co-op defense was extremely solid against the attacking Whitecap women, with goaltender Samantha Behm leading the way making many spectacular saves including some at point blank.  Arguably Behm was the player of the match showing flashes of brilliance stopping shots that most would say were unstoppable.  Her athleticism enabled her to keep the score-line close and seemed to motivate her teammates to try and push forward.  The Whitecaps struggled to find the back of the net in the first half which ended 0-0.  Although the young Co-op ladies did not manage to create many grade “A” scoring chances they did manage to put the Whitecaps back on their heels a few times catching the Caps flatfooted in the back.  The Caps finally broke the deadlock with a well-placed shot off a corner kick by a Whitecap defender that was waiting at the top of the penalty area.  The rest of the game was back and forth with the Co-op women close to finding the equalizer in the last minute of the game almost scoring off their final corner kick of the game.  Final whistle blows with the Caps winning 1-0.  The Peninsula Co-op Reserves play Sunday July 15th kick off 2pm at Hampton Park vs. the North Shore Girls Soccer Club.
