Victoria, BC – The Victoria Highlanders FC signed four players Wednesday in advance of the start of the 2009 United Soccer Leagues PDL season. The club signed midfielders Lennart Dobravsky, Matt Pele, Nicolas Reyes and forward Steve Scott, meaning all four will be eligible for the Highlanders opening game against the Spokane Spiders on Friday, May 1 in Spokane.
Reyes (28) is the only USL veteran in the group, having appeared for the Calgary Storm/Mustangs back in 2003 and 2004. A Canadian U-20 national team member in 2001, Reyes is a speedy and agile midfielder who brings a wealth of experience to the Highlanders FC team. At his previous club, Calgary Callies, Reyes helped them win the Canadian National Cup Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland back in 2008,
Pele (22), a player who would love to take after his famous namesake, comes to the Victoria Highlanders FC from Western Washington University. Pele is a powerful and versatile player who can play as a central midfielder as well as up front. A Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2008, Pele will bring much needed grit to the Highlanders midfield core.
Dobravsky (22), who was born in Hannover, Germany, will bring some international flavour to the Highlanders squadron. Dobravsky moved to Vancouver Island after his younger brother earned a scholarship for rugby at the Shawnigan Lake School. A silky smooth player who has a nose for the goal, Dobravsky will be a threat for opposition defenders.
Scott (27), is the only local player joining the club in this round of signings. Scott is a veteran of Sooke Celtic of the Vancouver Island Soccer League, as well as Victoria United of the Pacific Coast Soccer League. The scoring leader in 2005 in the PCSL, as well as the VISL Rookie of the Year in 2006, Scott's power and booming left foot will be a welcomed addition to Coach Miller’s plans.
