Highlanders edge out Nanaimo United

Posted on: Monday, April 13, 2009

The Victoria Highlanders FC scored late in the first half and early in the second half to earn a 2-0 win over Nanaimo United of the VISL Premier Division.

UVIC midfielder and Highlanders trialist, Miguel Romeo, scored on a deflection in the 43rd minute to send the Highlanders up one nil at the half.  Romeo followed up with a deft corner kick that signed defender Craig Robertson finished with a solid header 3 minutes into the second half to give Victoria all the goals they would need.

Highlanders goalkeeper Dan Kilpatrick earned the shutout after stopping United on the few dangerous chances they earned.   In the dying minutes, Kilpatrick was forced to make a diving save to his left to preserve the clean sheet.

A notable player missing from the action was Lennart Dobravsky.  On the past year, Dobravsky was a member of Nanaimo United as well as the Vancouver Island University.  Unfortunately, he was unable to play due to a nagging leg injury that kept him on the sidelines.  The German midfielder will be able to suit up for Nanaimo United in their Provincial Cup match next weekend, returning to the Highlanders for full duty if they are unable to advance.

The Highlanders Main Camp starts Friday and runs through April 26th at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence (PISE) at the Camosun College Interurban Campus. The clubs first game of the United Soccer Leagues PDL is May 1st in Spokane against the Spiders.
